Wilderness Walking In Northern Places

'there is nothing like a wilderness journey for rekindling the fires of life. Simplicity is part of it. Transportation reduced to leg - or arm - power, eating irons to one spoon. Such simplicity, together with sweat and silence, amplify the rhythms of any long journey, especially through unknown, untattered territory. And in the end such a journey can restore an understanding of how insignificant you are - and thereby set you free' (Colin Fletcher)

Winter Highlands - Hot Tenting

10/12/2016

A quick five days in the Highlands saw a variety of experiences and a chance to test some new gear. Alas the deep snows of only a week ago were thawing fast in mild temperatures as I crossed the Cairngorms. Moments on the second day of unseasonal balmy weather  and even warm sun as I cross the park.

Much more like early autumn, probably even bettering some summer days, I rounded the base of the Devil's Point sweating under a winter load which included snow shoes and a sleeping system designed to withstand the preceding week's temperatures of minus twelve.

Winter though returned only a few hours later. Not least awakening on the Mhoine Mhor on day three to light snow and freexing winds.

However, down in wooded glens the Trekkertent Hot Tent made a triumphant debut. I meet Marc and we defy an outside of minus 6 as my stove pumps out enough heat to have the thermometer hitting 25 degrees c, incredible stuff.

I intend to be back up to Scotland soon. Marc and I have been bitten by the winter camping bug. I've a trip to Sweden in March, I want to push my backpacking into the deep cold, so fingers crossed that Scotland delivers a chance to test my set up before I head north.

The Hot Tent? Can't find anything on their site. Have you mentioned it before and I've missed it?

Hello Dave!

It's a prototype, a custom Drift 2. Helps to go camping with a tent designer!
