Wilderness Walking In Northern Places

'there is nothing like a wilderness journey for rekindling the fires of life. Simplicity is part of it. Transportation reduced to leg - or arm - power, eating irons to one spoon. Such simplicity, together with sweat and silence, amplify the rhythms of any long journey, especially through unknown, untattered territory. And in the end such a journey can restore an understanding of how insignificant you are - and thereby set you free' (Colin Fletcher)

tent guilt!

Its arrived! A brand new Henry Shires Scarp 1 all the way from the USA. I paid the customs fee after the little note from the 'UK Border Force' (£34) and found this waiting for me when I got home tonight. My six year old son asked what it was and I told him it was a new tent. He said 'don't you have quite a few already' and I then had to stop and count. It's six in total but we can discount two as a 'pop-up' from Tescos and a cheapy Coleman from Argos (does a good job though for £20 and you don't worry about it being stolen from campsite). The other three though are a bit more classy with two Hillebergs (one old Akto and the family Nallo 4 GT) and of course a TN Laser Comp. I do feel a bit guilty though but arguably the Akto needs some repair work and the Comp ... well I do like it but I want something with a double porch and this seems to tick all the boxes. Obviously I have spent too much time on the blogoshere reading how good these tents are!

I look forward to using it. I think I need to get some good use in before the off in July though. Sometimes individual tents have things that need ironing out so it's a good excuse to get to the Highlands. I do, however, feel slightly regretful that both the Akto and the Comp are literally on the shelf. I don't, however, mind spending money on tents. Last year I spent almost thirty nights out 'under canvass' and one of these is around the price of a few nights in a b and b.
