Wilderness Walking In Northern Places

'there is nothing like a wilderness journey for rekindling the fires of life. Simplicity is part of it. Transportation reduced to leg - or arm - power, eating irons to one spoon. Such simplicity, together with sweat and silence, amplify the rhythms of any long journey, especially through unknown, untattered territory. And in the end such a journey can restore an understanding of how insignificant you are - and thereby set you free' (Colin Fletcher)

Southern Oceans - Island Backpacking

5/3/2015

I haven't had so much time to devote to the blog. I've been fairly focused the last couple of months. Work's bought an unexpected project, an interesting one at that. I'm bound for the South Atlantic for a while, a pretty serious piece of UK Government business will see myself and a small team of people heading out to the British Overseas Territories of Ascension Island and St Helena.

The work itself will be interesting, if challenging. The journey to these far flung islands will be a remarkable one as well. St Helena still has no functioning airport (though one is being built courtesy of a £250 million UK investment. We are flying to Ascension on a Royal Air Force plane and then it's a few days across the S Atlantic on the last Royal Mail Ship, the RMS St Helena.

I've been promised some play time and St Helena has got some interesting walking. I'm packing a light bag which should see me into some of the most inaccessible parts of this island. Ridge lines everywhere and a great variety of climates. I'll camp naturally. The weather's temperate too, a pleasant 25 degrees centigrade the mean temperature.

I'll blog upon my return. I also need to finish Svalbard off though am pleased to say I've written a piece on Svalbard for May's TGO Magazine in the UK. Some new kit to use. Looking forward to poncho/quilt from As Tucas and a pair of Otal pants. Paramo have donated me some warm weather clothing so I'm set.

A little more on St Helena here, looks good!
